Speedcheck User Guide
A guide to using the Speedcheck app by Left Field LogicGetting Started
When you first open Speedcheck, you will be presented with a Welcome screen. Tap Get Started to review how the app handles your data, including information about privacy, iCloud sync, and Cloudflare's speed test infrastructure. Tap Agree & Continue to accept the Terms of Service and begin using the app.
App Tabs
Speedcheck has three main tabs at the bottom of the screen:
- Test — Run a new speed test and view live results.
- Results — View your history of saved speed test results.
- Settings — Manage your preferences, view legal documents, and find app information.
Connection Indicator
At the top of each tab, you will see your current network connection type (e.g., WiFi, Cellular, Ethernet). If you are on a connection that may incur data charges (such as cellular), the indicator will appear in red as a warning.
Running a Speed Test
Navigate to the Test tab to run a speed test.
- Tap the Start Test button to begin a speed test.
- The test will measure your download speed, upload speed, and latency using Cloudflare's network infrastructure.
- While the test is running, you can tap Stop Test to cancel it at any time.
- Once the test is complete, your results will be displayed and automatically saved.
Live Measurement Charts
While a test is running, you will see expandable sections for Download Measurements and Upload Measurements. These show real-time charts plotting individual measurement samples in megabits per second (Mbps). Each group of samples corresponds to a different payload size used during the test. A Latency Measurements section shows the status of latency testing.
Each section displays a status label:
- Waiting — The measurement phase has not started yet.
- Running — The measurement phase is currently in progress.
- Done — The measurement phase is complete.
Understanding Your Results
After a speed test completes, your results are displayed with the following fields:
- Machine
- The name of the device that ran the test. On Mac, this is your computer's name. On iPhone and iPad, this may show as the device model.
- Connection
- The type of network connection used during the test (e.g., WiFi, Cellular, Ethernet).
- Date
- The date and time the speed test was performed.
- Download (Mbps)
- Your download speed in megabits per second. This measures how quickly your device can receive data from the internet. Higher values are better. Common activities and typical speeds needed:
- Web browsing: 5–10 Mbps
- HD video streaming: 10–25 Mbps
- 4K video streaming: 50+ Mbps
- Upload (Mbps)
- Your upload speed in megabits per second. This measures how quickly your device can send data to the internet. Higher values are better. Upload speed matters for video calls, uploading files, and sharing content.
- Jitter (ms)
- The variation in latency over time, measured in milliseconds. Lower values are better. High jitter can cause issues with real-time applications like video calls and online gaming, resulting in choppy audio or video. Ideally, jitter should be under 30 ms.
- Latency (ms)
- The time it takes for data to travel from your device to the server and back, measured in milliseconds. Lower values are better. High latency causes noticeable delays in interactive applications. Typical values:
- Excellent: under 20 ms
- Good: 20–50 ms
- Fair: 50–100 ms
- Poor: over 100 ms
Viewing Past Results
Navigate to the Results tab to see your complete history of speed tests.
- On iPhone, results are displayed as a list of cards showing download speed, upload speed, date, device name, and connection type. Tap any result to view its full details. Swipe left on a result to delete it, or tap Edit in the toolbar to manage multiple results.
- On iPad and Mac, results are displayed in a sortable table. Click any column header to sort by that field. Select a result and use the toolbar buttons to view details or delete it. You can also right-click a result to access these options from a context menu.
iCloud Sync
Speedcheck can sync your test results across all of your Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, and Mac) using iCloud.
- You must be signed in with your Apple Account on each device.
- iCloud sync must be enabled for Speedcheck on each device.
How to enable iCloud sync for Speedcheck
On iPhone or iPad:
- Open the Settings app on your device.
- Tap your name at the top to open your Apple Account settings.
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap Apps Using iCloud (or Show All to see the full list).
- Find Speedcheck and make sure the toggle is turned on.
On Mac:
- Open System Settings.
- Click your name at the top, then click iCloud.
- Click iCloud Drive, then click Apps Syncing to iCloud Drive.
- Find Speedcheck and make sure it is enabled.
Once iCloud sync is enabled, your test results will automatically appear on all your devices. New tests run on any device will sync to the others.
